Denmark's best places to visit in summer

All Danish residents say with confidence that they live in the best country in the world. What's more, it has been voted the world's best country to travel to. Denmark is filled with so many beautiful and cozy summer holiday destinations that it's difficult to cover in just one guidebook. But we will try to show you the best of them, in our opinion.

Limes and crocodiles for your summer holiday in Denmark

On the opposite end of Zealand, Faxe Kalkbrud looks like something out of warmer skies. But strangely enough, it's located right here, just south of Køge, and is the perfect place to tour if you're on a summer holiday in Denmark.

63 million years ago, sharks and crocodiles swam here together when the limestone quarry was a sea. Now a layer of limestone 90 meters deep has formed. In addition to seeing the beautiful surroundings of the limestone quarry, you can visit the Faxe Geomuseum.

At the museum, you can learn about dinosaurs and the history of limestone workers. Take a tour of the limestone quarry to find fossils of various marine animals such as sharks and octopuses.

Stephens Clint - in the footsteps of the dinosaurs

About 20 minutes from Faxe Kalkbrud you can visit Stevns Klint and the old Højerup church, which stands on the edge of a cliff. According to www.godtur.dk, here you'll find a cozy and peaceful area with the chance to walk along the beach and eat in local restaurants.

However, the main reason you should visit Stevens Clint is not for its coziness, but for the history of the place and the fact that the cliff was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.

The fisherman's yard at Stevens Clint tells us something special from the past. The fish clay contains fish scales and a rare element not found in many places in our plant, namely iridium. Iridium is a metal derived from the asteroid that fell to Earth 66 million years ago and wiped out the dinosaurs.

Stevns Klint has both ancient traces of dinosaur times and old-fashioned coziness and is a prominent place to settle in or visit on a day trip from Copenhagen.

Copenhagen you don't already know

Copenhagen is a magnet for tourists from home and abroad, with plenty of sights to see and not least to try. However, it's still possible to get away from it all and explore the more secretive parts of the capital.

Hop on your bike in the harbor bus and take a journey through the new Sidhavn by water and land. It's a whole new world of modern architecture, canals you can kayak through and cozy harbor life opening up on the southern side of the city.

There's also plenty of room for tourists in the northwestern neighborhood. The neighborhood is a fascinating mix of old businesses, trendy new cafes, food from around the world, and "pocket parks" between the apartment buildings.

A walk around Copenhagen also offers plenty of gabled paintings by young and established artists - it's just a matter of looking around.

Hornbæk is almost a must during your summer holiday in Denmark

North Zealand is a fantastic area in itself, but Hornbæk stands out from the crowd.

A summer day at Hornbæk Harbour is fantastic. Walking around the harbor and along the small roads between the houses is an experience in itself. The houses in Hornbeck Harbour are very much like themselves. They are colorful, cozy and connected by small roads which can be walked on in good weather.

By the way, the Bagt baker in Hornbæk makes an excellent brownie-based strawberry cake - the price is high, but it's worth every penny! Kongens Nordsjælland is such a fantastic place for a summer holiday in Denmark.

Spend your summer holiday in Denmark: The best country in the world

There are many other great resorts in Denmark besides the ones we've found a place for here. How about a trip to Bornholm, to small neighbor Kristiansjö in the east or car-free Thuno in Kattegat? It's up to you.

We live in the best country in the world, and we need to remember to take advantage of it. A really good summer holiday in Denmark!
